Vacation with a Fit Frequent Flyer

When I travel with friends or family I always get one of two questions: Do I have to work out, or Will you train me?  Hannah and I have been on a dozen vacations together, and over the course of her fitness journey I have gotten both questions from her.  But this trip, before leaving for Austin, she asked, “Will you kick my ass?”  Challenge accepted.

We stayed at the Westin Austin Downtown Hotel, which met all my hotel qualifications: central location, room service, pool, and of course, a good gym.  The hotel gym was especially important on this trip because we would be eating and drinking for 3 days straight.  That and I had a ass-whooping to deliver.

When I work out on vacation I aim to get the biggest bang for my workout buck.  This is best accomplished by working large muscle groups for optimal burn and in a circuit style training to add a cardio element.

Both Austin workouts were designed to hit our largest muscle groups: legs, chest and back.  The workouts are similar in that they will both work the entire body, but one was created to focus on chest muscle groups and the other on back muscles.  This gave us 2 full body workouts without over training any one muscle group.  We began each workout with 20 minutes on the treadmill.

Total body Workout - Chest Day

Circuit training is accomplished by performing exercises one right after another with minimal rest between exercises.  Each circuit will be performed 3 times before moving on to the next circuit.  Be sure to move swiftly from one exercise to the next to keep your heart rate elevated, but give yourself a minute or two of rest between circuits.

Chest Day Bonus Exercise: Complete 1 set of 10 burpees between each circuit. 

Total body Workout - Back Day

Back Day Bonus Exercise: Complete 1 – 1 minute Plank Hold between each circuit.
