Last year my husband and I stayed at 1 Hotel South Beach for our Honeymoon and lusted over every detail right down to the scent. You can read more about 1 Hotel here. Frankly, I haven’t gushed over a hotel since. That is until we celebrated our wedding anniversary in San Diego and stayed at The Pedry. I can’t say it ranks equal to 1 Hotel, for me, but for a downtown hotel on the West Coast The Pendry shined!
The Pendry is a boutique hotel located in San Diego’s historic gaslamp district right in the heart of downtown San Diego. I loved this location. It’s walking distance to the convention center and Petco Park. And, right behind the convention center is the ferry that will take you to Coronado Island, where you can shop, eat, and explore the beautiful Coronado, CA.
If food, drinks and nightlife are your scene the Gaslamp district has it all. There are so many delicious restaurants within blocks of The Pendry. My husband and I ate so well on this trip and walked nearly everywhere. In fact, I think the only thing that saved us from noticeable weight gain was all the walking we did.
If you really want to eat well in San Diego than Little Italy is a must. Little Italy has something for everyone from rugged neighborhood bars like Waterfront Bar & Grill to date night eateries like Herb & Wood. I even found my favorite vegan restaurant of all time there: Cafe Gratitude. From the Pendry, Little Italy is only about a 10 minute drive or an inexpensive Uber/Lyft ride.
Cleanliness, Comfort and Customer Service
The Pendry Hotel opened a little over 6 months ago and is considered the new “it” place to stay. If it were a car it would still have the new car smell – it’s that new! The hotel is clean, beautiful and draped in luxury.
Beyond the appearance, I was blown away by the staff and the service we received. I checked in a day earlier than my husband to attend a few work meetings. Upon checking in, I mentioned to Kai at reception that my husband would be joining me the following day to celebrate our anniversary. I was immediately upgraded from the 6th to 12th floor.
Come Friday, our actual anniversary, we were surprised with a few anniversary gifts from Kai accompanied with a nice handwritten note, which was a very nice touch. Thing is, I didn’t tell Kai which day our anniversary was, just that we were celebrating that weekend. I asked her the next day how she knew, and she said she guessed based on our dinner reservations. It’s rare to find truly exceptional customer service these days. With just a couple extra steps and good guess work Kai made our night even more special.
First-rate customer service didn’t stop there. We also had the pleasure of meeting Chef Concierge, Justin Sondgeroth. Justin has an answer for everything San Diego related. He probably has an answer for everything not San Diego related also, but I just didn’t get the chance test him on that theory. He is a wealth of information and demonstrates outstanding service and professionalism.
For me, a hotel gym is high on list of necessary accommodations, and is a huge factor in whether or not I will book future stays at a hotel. The Pendry gym gets my stamp of approval. It is spacious, clean and has a wide variety of free weights, cardio equipment, TRX, etc. It has everything one would need to achieve quality workouts several days in a row.
The rooftop pool is a party – at least Friday through Sunday. The music is lively, the food tasty and the water refreshing. However, if I were to ding The Pendry at all it would be in there poolside waitstaff. The waitresses were exceptionally slow to take drink/food orders and very good at ignoring people altogether. We, amongst others, decided it easier, and quicker, to go stand in line at the bar. Frustrating when you’re there to relax.
In terms of poolside dining, however, The Pendry does it well. This coconut ceviche was the perfect poolside snack, and vegan! I even saved my left over plantain chips to have as snack another time.
Poolside lunch on our final day – Kale apple salad and Ahi Tuna salad. So Good!!
Where the poolside service lacked the spa made up for in spades. The gym, pool and spa are all located on the 3rd floor. I would have guessed some of the noise from the gym and pool would carry into the spa area, but instead the spa is a beautiful private oasis. I loved the earthy decor and serene co-ed waiting area.
My husband booked a Swedish massage, and I a facial. We both walked away from our services raving about the treatments. They were phenomenal. I will even to go as far as to say it was the best facial I have EVER had, and I’ve had a lot of facials.
Bonus Points – the entire product line was vegan!
Obviously, we enjoyed our stay. I give The Pendry an overall rating of: Outstanding.
Whether you are planning to be in San Diego for work, a romantic getaway, or solo retreat I highly recommend The Pendry.
