I was back in Southern California this past week where I learned about something called “June Gloom”. I didn’t think California was ever gloom, however, while the rest of us are finally hitting our stride of summer days, California is overcast and even a little chilly the closer you are to the ocean. Expecting temperatures in mid-eighties I packed accordingly – lightweight romper, a pair of white capris, short sleeve blouse, etc. Big mistake for this warm weather babe!

I arrived in LA early Tuesday morning with only a couple of conference calls to attend. My first face to face meeting wasn’t until 3 pm in Redondo Beach at the Shade Hotel. I conveniently booked my stay at Redondo Beach Hotel, which is just across the street from Shade Hotel and $100 less/night. To be fair Shade Hotel is the trendy new hotel right at the marina with beautiful ocean views. If that’s what you’re looking for than Shade Hotel is they way to go.
With some extra time in my morning schedule I was able to hit the gym for quick workout. I was crunched for time and not feeling inspired to make up my own routine, so I turned to the Nike Trainer Club App. I love this app! It’s fantastic if you like instructed workouts, are new to working out, or just don’t want to think about it to much. You choose your level, duration of time, and the type of workout that appeals to you. It has everything from stretching and mobility to intense plyometric workouts. I’ve used this app on more than one occasion when I’m traveling. I also recommend Nike Training Club for those of you who like at home workouts. Best part, IT’S FREE!

After my workout I walked down towards the Redondo Beach Pier. I left the hotel still in my sweaty workout clothes with no jacket. I mean, it’s mid-eighties in LA, right? Wrong! Between the ocean air and overcast I was covered goose bumps from head to toe! I set out in search of a quick grab-n-go salad but ended up at R/10 Social House. To be honest, it was the first place I could dive into and hide my THO!! TMI, but Idc. 🙂
I have no regrets about R/10 Social House. The Summer Veggie Hash was my favorite meal of the trip! I’ll admit, I’m a sucker for a good hash any day, but this little number was packed full of nutrients and taste! I’m inspired to add snap peas and cippollini onions to my next hash.
The next day all of our meetings were in or around Manhattan Beach. I am so grateful for a job where I get to use beach towns as my boardroom. The ability to conduct meetings almost anywhere and work from our phones is definitely a perk to the era we live in.
As I meet up with my male co-workers, again covered in goose bumps, I inquired about the weather, “I thought it was always sunny and warm here, what gives?” On this particular day it was warmer in Portland by 15 degrees, yet I’m in LA cold and longing for a jacket. This is when I learned about “June Gloom”. June in Southern California is typically overcast, and the fog and ocean air makes even eighty-five degrees feel much cooler. By July 1 the clouds are gone and the beaches are warm. For this reason, the locals call this time of year June Gloom.
Local tip: If you are planning a trip to California your best months are July-March.
